BOBIE.INFO. Matabu, Dusun Timur. Central Kalimantan. The rivers in Katingan, Central Kalimantan, used to be the lifeblood. The clear flowing water brought blessings to the surrounding community—for bathing, drinking, fishing, and farming. But now, that clarity is just a memory. Mining waste, especially illegal gold mining (PETI), and forest encroachment activities have polluted the rivers that used to be a source of life.
The river water has changed color, smells, and is no longer suitable for consumption. Fish whose habitat is clear water die and only fish that can survive in unclean water remain, children are starting to suffer from skin diseases, and residents have to walk far just to get clean water. The river that used to be the center of life has now turned into a threat.
Katingan is sending a message: if nature continues to be exploited without control, then the community will be the first to suffer. When river water becomes poisoned, can we still call it a source of life? (bobie)
